A Special Sign for A Bridal Shower

A Maid of Honor looking to make her bride’s Parisian-themed bridal shower extra special approached me for help. She asked if I could make a chalkboard sign for the party that celebrates the special love of the bride and groom. The result is a large poster that the MoH was able to take to her local print shop, avoiding all the mess and special handling typically associated with making a real chalkboard sign. As a bonus, this was a vector file, meaning that the MoH can be scale it up or down without losing image quality!

I had a lot of fun playing with various glyphs and textures in Illustrator to produce the chalk effects. Lesson learned: the chalkboard filters in Illustrator don’t make things look like chalk! A much better choice is using the Conte Crayon filter.

I paid special attention to typography in this project. When attempting to fake a chalkboard look, some designers forget to hand-morph the letters in order to give them a hand-drawn feel. I made sure that the piece feels organic by carefully manipulating too-straight edges and lines in the typography.

Mixing font families in the piece added to the Parisian-cafe theme of the poster.

Here’s the final result in action:

Infographic: Education, Income, and Occupation in the U.S. (2010)

The following infographic was created in 2010 based on US Census data estimates (at the time of creation, the 2010 Census data had not been released). The graphic examines differences in education and income levels achieved, as well as differences in occupation, between groups stratified by U.S. citizenship status.

    The Flingstress

One of the most fun projects I’ve ever contributed to is The Flingstress. A while back, a young woman approached me with an idea for a blog. She wanted to (anonymously) write about her adventures and misadventures in dating, and her dream execution of storytelling included a comic strip that would accompany each little tale…. [Continue Reading]
