Infographic: Emigration of physicians by country of origin (2010)

In 2010, I was part of Sticks + Stones, an international design collaboration between universities in the United States, China, Germany, and Turkey that won a Core77 Design Award. We put together an exhibit in Berlin that invited visitors to contemplate the roles of stereotyping, migration, and immigration in their lives.

One of the projects I contributed is an 18-food informational banner that examined the rates of emigration of physicians from the four participating countries. The banner reveals a somewhat surprising trend of emigration out of Germany–the number of doctors that leave this country dwarfs the number of physician emigrants from other countries with much higher populations. Visitors are faced with a visually overwhelming column of German flags that is much higher than a human’s hight, where each flag is representative of an emigrant physician.

It bears repeating, Sticks + Stones won a Core 77 design award. Check it out!

Although it’s the only studio class so far to make me feel completely incompetent, I’m going to miss screenprinting. It’s strangely satisfying. I never expected to want to make illustrative work like this, but being in this class unlocked this really weird desire to draw characters. I’m probably not going to do well in that… [Continue Reading]

How I work: designing a cover for Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina

Not too long ago, Aleks Jakulin of publishing startup Ganxy alerted me of a really great initiative. Recovering the Classics is a project organized by The Creative Action Network to crowdsource fresh new looks for beloved books (Zing! You guys need a new slogan?), in order to reignite interest in classic literature. Obviously, I signed up… [Continue Reading]

The following magazine spreads were designed while employed by Bussolati Associates in Washington, DC. Publications include magazines from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), the Society of American Florists (SAF), and the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC).

    Bussolati Hearts Our Clients

Bussolati sends out a yearly corporate gift to its clients on Valentine’s Day. Each year, the theme is “Bussolati Hearts Our Clients”, consisting of a package with wine and chocolates to say our thanks. I got to develop and design the 2012 interpretation of the theme. This project was a lot of fun–from brainstorming as… [Continue Reading]
